ABOUT ME…
I am a Los Angeles-based composer with worldwide performances and a catalog of over 90 works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and solo instruments. I also conduct (the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra), perform (piano and classical guitar), and lecture (for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and for my ongoing series of classical music lectures on Zoom). My Ph.D. is from Harvard University, where I studied with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Leon Kirchner. I also have degrees from the New England Conservatory and UCLA.

My life is centered around composing and building a passion in people for classical music. Explore this website to learn about classical music through my lectures and blogs. Listen to my music or view my scores. Consider joining Russell’s Classical Consortium, a unique group of listeners from around the world who have become a community that gets together with me regularly on Zoom to discuss classical music. If you have questions or responses, feel free to email.

My Latest Composition
Diminished Resistance
for full Orchestra

It is no simple thing to preserve democracy. That is the idea behind my new dramatic orchestra overture Diminished Resistance. In every phrase, two distinct diminished chords fuse/clash against each other. They approach each other, they recede; they confront, they flee; they fret, they exult; they lament, they battle. It premieres this November 20 and 21 with the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra.
