I have enjoyed your Upbeat Live presentations. Please add me to your e-mail list.
We enjoyed your "program notes" presentation very much, but did not receive the hand out(they ran out) nor did the sign up sheet reach us.
Sunday Feb 7.
Please include us we are lovers of especially Classic music.
Rusty you rock!!!
I keep thinking about the theory I learned with you as I play and listen. Today I opened a book of Bach Chorales and played; reminded me of your class! Looking forward to upcoming lectures.
Dear Russell,
All I can say is that my wife and I should be shot at sunrise for having dinner at Disney Hall the other night instead of attending your lecture. We were late, and hungry, but had I heard any previous downloads of your presentations before then, I would have gladly skipped anything as banal as food. This was the Brahms 2 performance by the Berlin Phil. We've gone to many lectures in the past and I find them invaluable and delightful. The level of information and expertise is very high and does a great job of preparing to hear the performance itself; but your great, good humor, incredible insights and (especially dear to my tiny electronic heart) your combination of media, certainly takes this special pre-concert time to a new plain. (We met Eric Bromberger again after many years at the end of one of his lectures last spring. His father was a colleague of my wife, Louanne, at the University of Redlands. When I was a freshman in the early 60's his father, Prof. Bromberger, gave us newbees a series of weekly musicales in his home. I will never forget his generosity and interest in our young minds and empathy with the scary/exciting new world we faced in the School of Music. I also remember, vaguely, Eric as a very young kid.)
More to the point, I think the audio map book is the greatest innovation in music education I have ever come across. Having retired from a 40 year career as elementary teacher, junior/senior high guidance counselor and, for the last 20 years, community college counselor, and now free to pursue my serious piano practice and performance, my avowed ambition has been to communicate as intensely and often as possible the joy of classical music, piano and otherwise, using all the multimedia tools at my disposal, to a young set of ears and also to older folks who may be confined and therefore limited in their exposure to this great world of sound and emotion.
I have spent many hours learning power point and audio editing programs, and over the last year of so produced a body of fledgling products, variously effective but always a joy to work on (or through)! One major discovery was Rob Kapilow's ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS LISTEN. Like you, the combination of a genius intellect and an irrepressible love for everything sonically beautiful, and not just a modest wish to share it all, produced a totally novel and fascinating way to listen and consciously appreciate what these great men of the past have created.
Let's see, have a gotten to the "point" I was attempting? It is just to say a hearty BRAVO and THANKS for your gift to young people and the rest of us. I do hope to get to know your work much better and incorporate as much as possible into my own teaching effort. You may even see a live body for a quick handshake after one of your upcoming lectures.
Very best wishes,
Richard Long
Your lecture on Tuesday evening at Disney Hall for the 2nd Berlin Philharmonic Concert was wonderful! I never heard you lecture before and I was astonished at the breadth and depth of your mind!! Wow! What a wonderful music mind you have--so much to draw from in your lectures: your comparisons with other composers and other symphonies, etc. I look forward to hearing you again!
Thank you for the Great lectures before the Berlin Phil concerts - I went to both performances. I was late for the 1st lecture, so missed the perspective on the Schoenberg orchestration of Brahms Sting Quintet. The performance was much more colorful than I expected - if it would be easy to send a copy of your notes for that piece, I would take time to study them.
You helped me appreciate the wonderful programing by Rattle (the playing spoke for itself).
sincerely, ysm
It was refreshing to hear your positive and enthusiastic presentations at the Berlin Philharmonic previews. You might want to check out the Center's website at schoenberg.at and the Belmont website at schoenbergmusic.com

Dr. Steinberg! (Russell)
Just wanted to drop you a line and say hello. I studied composition under you at UCLA back in the mid 90's through the film scoring program. Russell, I still gotta say I love the way you teach! I learned a huge amount in what I consider to be too short a time.
I see you're still pushing out tons of great music at an alarming rate, too! :) If and when you have a chance, or feel inclined too make contact, please do.
Be well and Godspeed.

Russell,
Nice to catch up with you on the phone. I listened to Desert Stars while I was writing my movie. Would you send me that CD? I didn't know you composed on the piano so well. You are full of surprises.
Absolutely LOVE the new song. I want more!
Hey Russell,
Great Website. Still at Milken, I see. I miss hearing your music and the students as well. Finally got married on July 18,2009. Don't know when I will be in California again, but, will keep in touch.
Wendy
Hi Russel,
I enjoyed a lot your talk! And definitely the piano is not audible in some parts of the Prokofiev symphony 5...
great talk!
cheers!
Mariana
Hi Russell -
I met you at the Mendelssohn/Mahler Upbeat Live on Sunday March 22. We talked about UCLA, where I got my MFA in Percussion Performance Practice in 1989, Robert Winter, interviewing William Kraft in the percussion studio as part of the research for my MFA paper on the percussion part of Stravinsky's Histoire du Soldat. It had been two months so you might not remember me. I took forever to finally get on your site and the e-mail list. The site is excellent! I have the Beethoven Symphony No. 1 listening guide. It was given to me about 5 years ago by Zena David, an English teacher at Parkman Middle School in Woodland Hills, where I taught music from 1999 to 2007. She got it from a friend -was that you?
I will see you again this Saturday night at WDCH. I have tickets for the concert. The woman I am taking has not been inside the hall before. I look forward to another excellent, stimulating lecture. Prokofiev 5 is one of my all-time favorite symphonies!
I read your notes on Brahms 1 and Tchaikovsky 5. They were eloquent and informative, articulate and inspiring.
Please let me know if you repeat the Audiomaps course in the summer or fall as I have commitments on Tuesdays in March & can't attend.

Hi Russell,
I just wondered how you are since you haven't been to Oscar's (Hidalgo) in a while. Sounds as if you are quite busy. Just wanted to wish you a very happy holiday and a most prosperious new year.
Hi all Jamie here 23 UK , just thought I would introduce myself first beore posting and helpful learn some things and help others.
An accomplishable aim.
I attended the pre-concert event at the Disney Center on May 2nd and had the pleasure of hearing you speak both before and after the concert. Your enthusiasm was as enjoyable as the performance itself. I just wanted you to know that your love for music flows out of you and lights up the room. Your students and youth orchestra members are very lucky.
Thank you,
Kathy
Hello Russell.
I hope to catch up with you and the LAYO and hear your (and Ponchielli's and Verdi's) music at Zipper Hall on December 10th.
I shall phone (310) 903-5712 to find out about tickets and their cost.
Perhaps we'll have a chance to meet and talk a bit about "Winter Music"...

Rusty,
Okay, I've waited years to be able to say this with full on truth - You Rock! (Who Knew?) You're an incredible composer, a wonderful musician, a dedicated - and actually Fun!- teacher who taught me what little I know about the musical arts. I continue to be grateful for your existence. See you Sunday! ~Jone
How delighted I was to come upon your website! I remember how I used to stand in the basement of the apartment on Marlboro St. listening to the beautiful strains of music that came through your door so many years ago. Congratulations on all your accomplishments, and all the best!
Excellent website Rusty. Best, Jim
Beautiful new site, Russell! What a great way for everyone to experience the terrific work you do on all fronts.

WOW. very impressive. you are one cool dude.
Russell, I am totally speechless, and yet, I am not in the least bit surprised at how far you have come in all your accomplishments as of late!
If God ever had "favorites" to choose from, he certainly, and most assuredly chose you as one of his favorite ambassadors of music (you truly are one who both encaptures incredibe talent and skills, as well intelligence, and the ability to touch others with your gift of music).
Let me know if the Walt Disney Hall pre-lectures are meant only for children/students, or if it is available for all to attend, as well as where and when to purchase said tickets!
Thank you for continuing to be my friend, and I do hope that this year I will be able to attend at least one of your key events, so as to further enlighten and continue my education in "music".
Have a wonderful Rosh Hashanah (wrong spelling-sorry)
Maya, the school marm with "charm" (smiles)
