Rather than the German fairy tales of Robert Schumann’s Scenes from Childhood, Beach Pebbles evokes the sandpipers and sand castles of… Malibu. It begins in a prelude of Sea and Foam, the water all chromatic, murky, and muddled. It eventually clears, we find ourselves back in psychological time to the feelings of summer dreams, romance, sailboats, two lonely seagulls, etc. The pieces are short, romantic, nostalgic, and richly tonal.
